About the Challenge

Welcome to the most delicious bike ride in Utah! Inspired by the legendary Taco Bell 50K ultra marathon running race in Denver, the Great Glizzy Gauntlet is a 100-mile century cycling adventure that takes you to 10 of 12 Costco locations across the greater Salt Lake area, spanning Utah, Salt Lake, and Davis Counties.

Designed around the FrontRunner commuter rail system and extensive bike trail network, this ride offers multiple bailout points so you can customize your challenge. Whether you're going for the full 100-mile century or just want to hit a few Costcos for food court glory, this route has you covered.

Why Glizzies?

Because Costco's $1.50 hot dog combo has been the same price since 1985, making it the perfect symbol of value and consistency in an uncertain world. Also, they're delicious.

🌭 What's a "Glizzy"? Slang for hot dog, popularized in DC and spreading nationally via social media. Now you know!

Challenge Rules

🎯 Official Rules

  1. Be present at all 10 Costco warehouses on the route. Zero tolerance for course cutting β€” the route must be ridden south to north, Orem to Bountiful, as intended.
  2. Purchase and consume at least one food court item at each Costco you visit. Drinks alone do not count as a food order.
  3. All 10 stops must be completed on the same calendar day.
  4. You must have a valid Costco membership β€” or ride with a member who can get you through the door.
  5. Record your full ride with a GPS device (Garmin, Wahoo, phone, etc.) and export a .gpx file. This is your proof of completion.
  6. This is a self-supported event. No outside support vehicles. Fellow riders may help each other, but don't count on it.
  7. FrontRunner bail-out is always an option. Take the train at any station to end your day β€” partial completions count and appear on the leaderboard.
  8. E-bikes are welcome, but e-bike riders are ineligible for prizes and appear in their own leaderboard section.
  9. Register before the event and submit your ride by 11:59 PM Sunday, May 3rd to qualify for prizes and appear on the leaderboard. Register β†’ | Submit β†’
  10. Additional rules may be amended or added to protect the spirit of this event, which is to ride your bicycle to a statistically irresponsible number of Costcos in one day.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Proof Requirements

Verification is GPX-based β€” no photos required. Here's how it works:

  • Record your ride with any GPS device (Garmin, Wahoo, phone, etc.) and export a .gpx file when you're done.
  • Upload your GPX on the verification page β€” it automatically detects which Costcos you visited, calculates your elapsed time, and unlocks bonus challenge fields.
  • Log what you ate at each stop using the food order form that appears after your GPX is verified.
  • Submit β€” rides are reviewed manually and approved results appear on the leaderboard.

FrontRunner Meet-Up Times

Here are suggested FrontRunner meeting times to arrive at Orem Costco together. Official ride start: 10:00 AM at Orem Costco. FrontRunner stops north of North Temple (Woods Cross, Bountiful, Farmington, Layton) will NOT be able to get you to Orem on time for the 10:00 AM start. Frequently Asked Questions

How long will this take?

Estimated completion times based on 10:00 AM start:

  • Fast pace (17+ mph average): ~7.5-8 hours total β†’ Finish by 5:30-6 PM
Includes ~1.5-2 hours for Costco stops
  • Moderate pace (15-16 mph average): ~8-9 hours total β†’ Finish by 6-7 PM
Includes ~2 hours for Costco stops
  • Relaxed pace (14 mph average): ~9-9.5 hours total β†’ Finish by 7-7:30 PM
Includes ~2-2.5 hours for Costco stops β€’ Cutting it close!

πŸ• Key Constraint: All Costco food courts close at 7:00 PM. To complete the challenge, you must reach Bountiful Costco before closing. A 14 mph moving average is the minimum realistic pace to finish in time.

Can I use an e-bike?

Yes! E-bikes are tolerated. However, it might be harder to eat so much food if you're not exerting yourself as much. The calories have to go somewhere! E-bikes are not eligible for prizes.

What if I can't finish all 10 Costcos?

Totally fine β€” partial completions are welcome and appear on the leaderboard in their own tier. Completing even 5–6 Costcos is a serious accomplishment. Use FrontRunner to bail out at any station along the route and call it a day. Submit whatever you rode here β†’

Can I bring friends or family?

Absolutely! The more the merrier. Just make sure everyone either has their own Costco membership or rides with someone who does.

Is there a registration fee?

Nope! This is completely free. Just the cost of your food court items β€” roughly $15 if you hot dog it the whole way, up to $80 if you go full Chicken Salad across all 10 stops.

What about bike parking at Costco?

Most Costcos have bike racks. If not, you can lock your bike to a cart corral. If riding in a group, one person can wait outside and watch the bikes while others order food. Take your valuables with you!

What forms of payment does Costco accept?

Important: Costco food courts accept debit cards, cash, or Visa credit cards ONLY. Mastercard, Discover, and Amex are NOT accepted.

What about weather?

Weather pending! May weather in Utah can be unpredictable (40Β°F to 80Β°F). If weather is mostly good, bring a light jacket just in case. The event may be postponed if conditions are dangerous (severe storms, extreme temperatures). Check your email 48 hours before for any updates.

What if I get a flat tire or mechanical issue?

You're responsible for your own repairs - bring spare tubes, tire levers, and a pump or CO2 cartridges. Fellow riders may help if they can, but don't count on it. This is a self-supported ride!

Do I need a GPS device?

Highly recommended! The route has many turns and follows bike trails and roads throughout the Wasatch Front. A GPS head unit (Garmin, Wahoo, etc.) with the route downloaded will provide turn-by-turn navigation and make the ride much safer and more enjoyable. Download the route from Ride with GPS before the event. If you don't have a GPS unit, make sure to have the route loaded on your phone with offline maps, but a dedicated GPS device is strongly recommended.

Do I need to submit proof of completion?

Yes! To be eligible for bonus challenges and bragging rights, submit GPS data via our verification page.

Why does the route say 100 miles if Costco-to-Costco is ~96?

The full route is a true 100-mile century β€” but about 4 of those miles are getting to and from FrontRunner stations at either end of the route. The Costco-to-Costco riding distance is approximately 96 miles. Both numbers are accurate depending on what you're counting!

For prize timing purposes, only Costco-to-Costco time counts β€” the FrontRunner legs are excluded.

How are prizes awarded?

Session Co Jerseys (raffle): 3 winners drawn randomly from all verified riders. Every Costco stop you complete earns one entry β€” up to 10 entries total (11 if you complete the Spanish Fork bonus stop).

HandleStash Hot Dog Guru Cup Holder: Awarded to the fastest and slowest verified riders based on Costco-to-Costco time from GPX submissions. Must complete all 10 stops to qualify.

Your ride must be submitted and verified by 11:59 PM Sunday, May 3rd to qualify for any prize. Submit your ride here β†’

E-bike riders are not eligible for prizes and appear in a separate section at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Pre-ride registration is required to qualify for prizes or appear on the leaderboard. Register here β†’

All winners will be contacted by email.

How is the leaderboard ranked?

Human-powered riders are ranked using three tiers, in order:

  1. Most Costcos visited β€” more stops always ranks higher, regardless of time.
  2. Fewest food stops skipped β€” within riders who visited the same number of Costcos, anyone who ate at every stop they visited ranks above anyone who skipped. Any single skip drops you below the clean eaters.
  3. Fastest elapsed time β€” the final tiebreaker when Costcos visited and skip count are equal.

πŸ”‹ E-bike riders are listed in a separate section at the bottom of the leaderboard, ranked by the same criteria within their own group. They are not competing for podium positions or prizes.

Partial completers are ranked alongside full completers β€” just in a lower tier. See the live Results page β†’

Pre-ride registration is required to appear on the leaderboard. Register here β†’

Ready to Ride?

Pack your cycling gear and prepare for the most delicious century ride in Utah!

Remember to bring: water bottles, spare tubes, bike lights, sunscreen, helmet, phone, and appetite!

πŸ’‘ Lights strongly recommended: The event runs entirely during daylight hours β€” sunrise is before the earliest reasonable start time and sunset is well after even the slowest expected finish. That said, front and rear lights are still strongly recommended for visibility through tunnels, underpasses, and any unexpected delays. Better safe than sorry!

πŸ“± Highly Recommended: A GPS head unit (Garmin, Wahoo, etc.) with the route downloaded. The route is complex with many turns, and having turn-by-turn navigation will make your ride much safer and more enjoyable. Download the route from Ride with GPS before the event!
